The Poconos

The Pocono Mountain region in northeastern Pennsylvania is widely known as a four-season recreational resort area and has been a favorite destination for vacationers since the 1800’s. With over 2,400 square miles of mountains, lakes, streams and woodlands, the Pocono Mountains are a natural choice for nature, sports and outdoor enthusiasts. In the midst of such natural beauty, there are literally hundreds of attractions and places to stay, all of which makes the Pocono Mountains ideal for a family vacation or reunion, ski trip, hiking, fishing, historical tours, outlet shopping, corporate meeting, convention, or a honeymoon or couples getaway. The Poconos have been designated as one of the 40 “Last Great Places” in the world by the Nature Conservancy because of the range of unusual ecosystems found in the region. The Pocono region contains 9 state parks, 16 game lands, 150 lakes, 13 waterfalls, 72,000 acres of state forests, 170 river miles, and the 70,000 acre Delaware Gap National Recreation Area and is a natural retreat. This abundance of forests, wetlands, and other natural areas is home to many rare species of plants and animals. Some of the most beautiful waterfalls on the east coast are flanked by blossoming mountain laurel in the spring and brilliant foliage in the fall. The Pocono Mountains offer visitors something different to do during each season of the year. Hiking, picnicking, camping, horseback riding, mountain biking, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, boating, sailing, jet skiing, water-skiing, white-water rafting, downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, sleigh riding, golfing, tennis, fishing, and hunting are among the many outdoor activities available. The Pocono Mountains are also home to a number of museums, galleries, music festivals, summer stock theatre performances, concerts, and the Pocono 500 Speedway.
